At first you’ll notice that the X61 T misses a touch pad out. But, once you’ve worked with the user-friendly red track point for a while, you’ll be glad doing it without a touch pad, and raise the question, why this best mouse replacement did not became the standard and was not established overall.Toshiba PABAS217 charger The track point does not only ease quick navigation, it also demands less space. The keyboard has a concise, clearly structured, and user-friendly layout. This is except of the Fn key, because it swapped space with the Ctrl key.

Typing is comfortably silent without clattering. We were also pleased by the user-friendly point of pressure. Furthermore, many hot keys are provided, some of them twice, to be accessible also in tablet mode.Toshiba PABAS218 chargerThe most striking hot key is the ThinkVantage button, which can be used to invoke a menu covering a number of Lenovo specific tools. It provides, e.g., help for networking, data security, and a number of settings. If you press this button during system start-up, the recovery system will be started allowing to backup and restore data.

However, we were most interested in the pen, because we were not used to using the X61 tablet by pen on the display. The X61 tablet recognizes the pen already, if it is still 2 cm off the display, and marks this by a small circle. Clicking with the button at the pen’s side is equivalent to a right mouse click.Toshiba PABAS219 charger Navigating is alright, but, the point marked at the display is about 1mm moved to the right. Furthermore, we sometimes received the impression, that the track point only reacts slowly.

Therefore, we felt that the track point combined with the keyboard is the best input alternative. But, the pen is better for notes, drawings, and drafts, even more, because it recognizes a number of different pressure levels.Toshiba PABAS220 charger

Color DiagramThe X61 Tablet is equipped with a 12.1″ display with a maximum resolution of 1024×768 pixels. It captivates by a very good stability to the vantage point and gets only fuzzy at extremely acute angles. The brightness is just sufficient for outdoor usage, but, reading the display gets cumbersome in the sun. Toshiba PA3535U-1BAS charger

Although we first thought, that the display’s resolution is low, we soon understood this decision of the designers. A higher resolution would have made navigating and precisely positioning the pen difficult. The color diagram depicts a nearly ideal red and blue color curve, and a lowered green color curve. Also subjectively the image seems a little bit yellowish.Toshiba PA3781U-1BRS charger

The measured minimum brightness of the display (black value) amounted to 0.3 cd/m² and gives together with the maximum brightness of 119.1 cd/m² a maximum contrast of 397:1. While black value and contrast are very good, we were a little bit underwhelmed by the maximum brightness, even it was subjectively better. Toshiba PABAS216 charger We could not detect any anomalies regarding speed of reaction. The display of X61 Tablet surprised us with automatic dimming in battery mode. However, it can be disabled by BIOS settings.

It was pretty clear that the X61 Tablet won’t provide outstanding performance. However, the Intel Core 2 Duo L7500 with 1.6 Ghz and Intel’s integrated video solution, an Intel GMA 950, are too weak.Toshiba PA3634U-1BAS chargerHowever, 2 GB main memory kept hope alive that at least office performance is alright. Finally, it turned out, that the performance is actually sufficient for office work under Windows Vista. As pure office notebook, this Tablet PC is, in the reviewed configuration with best available equipment, quite alright.

However, it is completely insufficient for occasional games. It is not even possible to play Doom III with 8,5 FPS in the lowest resolution. Even older games cause problems, e.g., Quake 3 Arena reaches with best settings only an average of 24 FPS. Toshiba PA3634U-1BRS charger

Playing games with the X61 Tablet is like attending a car race with a Jeep: Not in the right ballpark. However, the Thinkpad’s performance is sufficient for its main field of operation. Furthermore, the battery runtime is long, because of low-energy components. Further information about the video card can be found here or in our comparison of mobile video cards. Please also look at our benchmark list of mobile processors or at our benchmark list of mobile video cards, in order to compare this notebook to other configurations.Toshiba PA3635U-1BAM PA3635U-1BAS charger

Although the surface temperatures of the Thinkpad X61 Tablet are generally alright, they are too high in Tablet mode, if you work lap top. At the bottom side the temperature increased to up to 46°C, at the hand ball support it was also as high as 35°C.Toshiba PA3635U-1BRM charger

The Battery Clearly Exceeds the CaseA special strengths of the X61 Tablet is its long battery runtime. However, it is only reached with the also, for an additional charge, available 8 cells battery. Anyway, above 8 hours maximum runtime is impressing. During WLAN operation, which is most common in practice, the battery runtime also exceeded 3 hours with high brightness. This is still sufficient for lessons, etc. Toshiba PA3635U-1BRS PA3636U-1BAL charger

Lenovo Thinkpad X61 TThe Thinkpad X61 Tablet is a first-class equipped notebook, which costs as much as 2800€. It produces unimpeachable evidence that unique design, fantastic features, and high-quality materials are not only provided by Apple. Furthermore, this Lenovo notebook captivates by excellent battery runtime, Toshiba PA3636U-1BAR chargergood display, impressing quality, and tablet functions, which are robust, but not outstanding. For most of you the X61s, which is equally equipped than the X61 Tablet, but, does not provide tablet function and cost about 600€ less, might be the better choice.

Multimedia Nexus. Desktop replacement notebooks are a dime a dozen, and Lenovo has tossed its hat into the ring with its introduction of the IdeaPad Y570, a strange hybrid between a media center and a portable business notebook. While the last part could be a little doubtful, the Y570’s style, fit, finish, and power-saving features make it an attractive pick for the shopper interested in a multimedia center with no compromises.Toshiba PA3636U-1BRL PA3636U-1BRS charger

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y570.The revamped IdeaPad Y series, announced in 2008, represents an odd outgrowth of Lenovo’s notebook development – exhibiting both the solid build quality of the company’s rugged ThinkPad line of business laptops and the flashy equipment and baubles of the standard consumer notebook market.Toshiba PA3832U-1BRS charger As such, this particular model, the Y570, competes with similar offerings by Acer (Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6402), HP (Pavilion dv6-6153cl), Samsung (RV520-W01), Dell (XPS 15z), and even Apple (MacBook Pro 15-inch). And although it plays host to a wide variety of novel technologies and pretty gadgets, weight and display choice make it a hard sell against the other runners. The brushed-metal lid of the Y570 features a curious maze-like dot pattern. (courtesy Lenovo, Inc.)

Let’s take a look at the screen lid a little closer, shall we?The Lenovo IdeaPad Y570, with its weight and size, sits firmly in the “desktop replacement” category of notebooks, and Lenovo spared no expense in making the case as sexy as possible. In a move that reminds us of the HP Pavilion series of notebooks,Toshiba PA3833U-1BRS chargerthe screen lid features acres of black brushed-metal with an attractive, minimalist maze-like dot pattern; unfortunately, the slightly-glossy surface treatment of both the screen lid and the inside of the laptop tends to trap fingerprints like nobody’s business.

The screen mounts to the main body of the notebook via two sturdy hinges, and is protected at the contact points by rubber spacers. On the inside, the laptop features brushed metal again, this time in languid lavender, with accents of orange, black and white on the keyboard. Toshiba PA3638U-1BAP chargerWhite is used as the LED color for the power, key-lock, and volume buttons/indicators, while orange is used as an accent color on the keyboard itself to point out key combinations triggered by use of the Fn key.

The space above the keyboard on the laptop’s base is occupied by 2 JBL speakers, the power button, a dedicated Lenovo OneKey Rescue button (more information in the Built-In Software/Accessories section), volume control keys, a screen brightness/contrast hotkey, and a fan speed hotkey. The space above the screen contains a 2.0-megapixel webcam, flanked on either side by labeled microphones.Toshiba PA3638U-1BRS PA3728U-1BAS charger

All the attractive colors and textures aside, let’s not confuse ourselves here, folks; the Lenovo IdeaPad Y570 is a big, bruising hulk of a notebook, at a hefty 5.95 pounds – and the rigidity of the case doesn’t disappoint. No flex in the screen or keyboard can be detected, even with rather violent applications of force toward the usual failure points. Toshiba PA3816U-1BRS PA3817U-1BAS chargerAs with most other recently-designed laptops, the exhaust slot of the computer points to the left of the user, preventing the unfortunate burning of our thighs…or our tender parts. However, there’s also no way of getting around it: the IdeaPad Y570 is too heavy to stand a chance against similarly-equipped yet lighter competitors like Dell’s XPS 15z (≈5.5 lbs.) and Samsung’s RV520-W01 (5.4 lbs.), even though its heft is a welcome indicator of build quality.Toshiba PA3818U-1BAS PA3818U-1BRS charger

Ports and connections labeled (adapted from Lenovo website). The blue numbers represent USB 3.0 ports, which were not present in the original image.Switchable graphics (onboard / NVidia GT 555M), wireless modem toggle switchesIf there is truly a singular point at which the Lenovo IdeaPad and ThinkPad series completely diverge,Toshiba PA3819U-1BAS charger it’s in the choice of connections on each notebook line. The ThinkPad line tends to feature the bare minimum of ports necessary for the business setting, whereas the Y570, like the rest of the revamped IdeaPad Y series, features a bevy of connectivity options since its goal is to appeal to traditional consumers.

The right side of the laptop’s baseplate is taken up largely by the Slimtype DVD/CD combo drive. The side closer to the front of the computer consists of two USB 3.0 ports, with the power jack and Kensington lock connector on the other side. The front of the computer contains only the SD card jack, Toshiba PA3819U-1BRS PABAS117 chargeras well as two toggle switches: the first for switching between discrete and onboard graphics, and the second for turning on and off the wireless modem. Finally, on the left side of the laptop can be found a VGA analog input, an HDMI jack, the Ethernet port, a combination USB/eSATA port followed by a USB 2.0 port, and headphone and microphone jacks.

We have to note here that Lenovo took a poor design choice regarding port placement. Mainly, most ports are constrained to either side of the case, meaning cables and equipment can become crowded and entangled more easily. Still, we applaud the fact that the power cable attaches to its jack on the right side of the laptop using a right-angle plug, Toshiba PABAS118 chargerwhich protrudes less than straight power connectors and reduces the risk of damaging the connector during daily use.

If there’s any complaint we have with Lenovo’s connection design, it’s a general one that we’d aim at plenty of other laptop manufacturers; folks, give a little bit more distance between the Kensington lock slot and other ports on the laptop! In the case of the Y570, the lock slot is dangerously close to the power jack, Toshiba PA3757U-1BRS chargerand while it probably isn’t a problem for most users, we’ve seen our share of large and bulky computer locks, and more than a few of them wouldn’t be able to connect simultaneously with an AC adapter.

The IdeaPad Y570 possesses the usual assortment of networking options. RJ-45 connectivity is powered by the Broadcom NetLink Gigabit Ethernet NIC, rated for 10/100/1000 Mbit/s communication speed, while the wireless connection is served by Intel’s WiFi link 1000 BGN, which is rated for 300 Mbps throughput. Our review model was equipped with an optional Bluetooth module as well, the 65-nm BCM2070 integrated chip from Broadcom.Toshiba PABAS213 charger

All three networking modules worked as advertised out of the box. Connecting to LANs was fast and without error, and when using wireless, we were able to connect to 802.1x managed infrastructures just as easily as unmanaged 802.11bgn home/business networks.Toshiba PABAS227 PABAS228 charger

Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y570 comes pre-installed with a 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium and hardware drivers, as well as a helpful smattering of pre-installed software, including Google Chrome, trial versions of McAfee Antivirus Plus and Microsoft Office 2010, and Microsoft Live Essentials 2011. Toshiba PABAS117 charger In addition, Lenovo has provided a few “tools”, most of which could be classified in the bloatware category:

In hindsight, the loadout of Lenovo software of questionable utility isn’t too bad when compared to recent offerings from, say, ASUS. But it’s far from acceptable, especially given that most of these utilities cramp productivity and can be replaced by free, more capable, easier-to-use software. Our suggestion? Ditch DirectShare, Games Console, Toshiba PABAS178 chargerSmile Dock, ooVoo, Power2Go, VeriFace, and UserGuide. Navigate over to Ninite.com and at the bare minimum, install Pidgin (replacing ooVoo) and imgBurn (replacing Power2Go).

Thankfully, the provided built-in hardware isn’t as bloated. As hinted earlier in the Case section, the dedicated OneKey rescue button above the keyboard ties together with the OneKey Rescue software, which allows one to restore the computer to a previous state via recovery console, make a backup of the system into an image file, or create a recovery disc in case normal system function gets disrupted. Toshiba PA3535U-1BRS charger

The IdeaPad Y570 also comes with a few accessories. If you want to be able to use the Y570 as a home theater PC (HTPC), and control the experience from a distance, the Lenovo Wireless Keyboard N5901, with its built-in mouse and USB interface, could be up your alley. Teleconference types could look into the Lenovo Headset P550, and/or the Lenovo Notebook Stand S1801A.Toshiba PA3816U-1BRS charger

Of all the iPad cases we’ve tested recently,Acer UM08A73 Kensington’s is the most like a notebook’s, as it has dedicated Pause/Break and Printscreen buttons in the function row. We’re not sure how necessary they are, though. Better to have more iPad-centric keys, such as cut and paste. We do like the Kensington includes a .com key, which is thoughtful, but it’s at the expense of the right Shift key, which is shrunken too much. The Keyfolio Pro is rated for 90 hours of battery life, the same as the ClamCase, and about 30 hours longer than the Belkin Keyboard Folio.Acer UM08A74

If you’re in the market for an iPad keyboard case that lets you work in landscape or portrait mode, the $99 Kensington Keyfolio Pro is the one to get. Not only is it attractive, but it’s highly functional, too. A few minor tweaks would make it even better, overall this accessory is a very good choice.Acer UM08B71

Kensington has been in the iPad accessory game for a while, and it shows. The $99 Keyfolio Pro is not only an attractive iPad 2 keyboard case, but it’s well thought out also. This case lets you rotate your iPad into landscape or portrait mode, and provides a comfortable keyboard for typing.Acer UM08B72

ReviewSpecifications. For those who find 9- and 10-inch slates too large to carry everywhere, 7-inch tablets provide greater portability and easier one-handed use. With competitors such as Acer, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Lenovo, and Samsung making 7-inch devices, Toshiba is entering an already crowded market with its new slate. However the new Thrive 7-inch brings some compelling favors to the party, including a high-resolution 1280 x 800 screen and an attractive design. But is this Tegra 2-toting tablet worth its relatively high $379 price?Acer UM08B73

Click to EnlargeOne of the most stylish tablets with this size display, the Thrive 7-inch shares the same aesthetic as its bigger brother, the 10-inch Toshiba Thrive. It has a luxurious rubberized back with a textured ridge surface that’s easy to grip. Classy chrome rings the front and rear cameras. As on the elder Thrive, the cameras sit on the short side of the device, making it a little too easy to cover the back-facing lens with your thumb when filming with the device in landscape mode.Acer UM08B74

While the 10-inch Toshiba Thrive was one of the bulkiest tablets on the market, its 7-inch brother is one of the lightest, making it well suited for one hand use. At 7.4 x 5. x 0.5 inches and 13.3 ounces, the 7-inch Thrive is thicker and heavier than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus (12.2 ounces, 7.6 x 4 x 0.4 inches). However, it’s lighter than the Acer Iconia Tab A100 (14.7 ounces, 4.6 x 7.7 x 0.5 inches), the Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet (14.2 ounces, 8 x 5 x 0.48 inches), and the Kindle Fire (14.6 ounces, 7.5 x 4.7 x 0.5 inches).Acer ZG5

Click to EnlargeOn the Thrive 7-inch’s left long side sit a volume rocker, power button, and orientation lock switch, along with a rubber port cover that hides the mircoUSB, microSD card reader, and microHDMI out ports. A 3.5mm headphone jack is located on the tablet’s short side top, with a proprietary docking station on the bottom.Acer AS07B71

Extremely rare among tablets, the Thrive 7-inch can charge when the docking cable is connected to a PC’s USB port, though it also comes with an AC adapter that lets it juice from an outlet. However, if you want to copy files from a PC, you must connect using the microUSB port rather than the docking cable.acer al10a13

Click to EnlargeThe Thrive 7-inch’s bright, colorful screen is the sharpest you’ll find on a 7-inch slate, thanks to its 1280 x 800 resolution. Most 7-inchers provide only 1024 x 600. That gives the Thrive an impressive pixel density of 215.63 PPI, much higher than other 7-inch tablets’ density of 169.55 PPI or 10.1-inchers’ density of 149.45 PPI. This higher density means much sharper images when you’re surfing the web, gaming, or playing videos.acer al10a31

When we streamed an HD trailer for The Avengers, images were extremely sharp and colors such as the blue in Captain America’s costume and red in Thor’s cape really popped. Colors remained vibrant even at 180-degree viewing angles and with the screen titled way back. At full brightness, the Thrive’s screen measured an impressive 355 lux on our light meter. Both the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet have brighter displays–460 and 392 lux respectively–but neither has a screen that’s as sharp as the Thrive’s.acer al10b31

When we played the jet-skiing game Riptide, objects such as the jet ski and our character’s helmet were much crisper than they were on the 10.1-inch Eee Pad Transformer Prime. Even when we read news articles on Cnn.com and NYTimes.com, text seemed crisper than on other tablets we’ve used.acer al10bw

The stereo speakers on the Thrive 7-inch produced reasonably accurate sound that’s loud enough to hear across a small room, though the audio was a bit flat. When we streamed Patrice Rushen’s bass-heavy “Forget Me Nots” from Rhapsody and Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out” from Slacker, the music was accurate and free of distortion and tininess. However, because the speakers are mounted on the left short side, it’s easy to accidentally cover them when holding the Thrive in landscape mode.acer al10g31

Click to EnlargeWhen positioned in landscape mode, the Thrive 7-inch’s screen is the ideal size for effective thumb-typing, as each hand can reach toward the middle of the keyboard with great ease. By default, the Thrive 7-inch is set to use Android 3.2′s stock keyboard, but Swype is also available. Many users will prefer Swype’s method of forming letters by tracing lines between keys, but we were annoyed by its inability to deal with new words as it kept autocompleting to “scream” when we tried to trace “Avram.”acer bt.00603.121

Though it is disabled by default, the Thrive 7-inch supports haptic feedback on either of its keyboards to provide tactile feedback as you type. With haptic feedback enabled on the stock keyboard, the Thrive 7-inch provided one of the most comfortable and accurate typing experiences we’ve had on an Android tablet.Acer LC.BTP00.008

Click to EnlargeApart from setting the default wallpaper to an attractive red-and-black abstract pattern, Toshiba has made no changes to Google’s Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system. Users unfamiliar with Honeycomb will appreciate its power and flexibility, but the software has a steeper learning curve compared to iOS for the iPad.Acer LC.BTP00.014

The Honeycomb OS has five customizable home screens for displaying widgets and shortcuts to your favorite apps. The lower left-hand corner of the screen contains virtual Back,Home, and Layers buttons, the latter of which shows thumbnails for each open application to make task-switching easy. Notifications appear along the bottom right, next to the time and battery icons. Tapping the battery icon also brings up a quick notifications/settings list, which lets you adjust the brightness and change the wireless without leaving your current app.Acer BATCL50L

All Honeycomb tablets come with a number of Google applications that are designed to take advantage of the large screen. Both the email (POP, IMAP, Exchange) and Gmail clients have two panes, one for viewing the contents of your inbox and another for reading the current message. The stock Honeycomb browser supports multiple tabs to make switching between different sites easy. The Thrive 7-inch comes pre-loaded with Google’s Android Market, which provides access to more than 300,000 apps. (Only about 5,000 of these have been specially optimized for tablets.)Acer BATCL50L4

With its dual-core 1-GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU and 1GB of RAM, the Thrive 7-inch packs plenty of power. In our testing, the tablet was more than capable of delivering eye-popping graphics on intense 3D games such as Need for Speed Shift and Riptide GP. Playing high-quality videos, surfing the web, and taking pictures were also no problem. Like all Android tablets we’ve tested, the Thrive 7-inch suffered from occasional moments of lag when we tried to move from one task to another too quickly, but these moments were fewer than on most other tablets we’ve used.Acer UM09G31

The Thrive 7-inch performed well on all the synthetic benchmarks we threw at it. On the Benchmark CPU test, it scored a strong 3,008, well above the tablet category average of 2,680 and about on par with the Tegra 2-powered Acer Iconia Tab A100′s score of 3018. The Toshiba was just a tiny bit behind the Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet (3,056) and the Amazon Kindle Fire (3,069), both of which use 1-GHz TI OMAP 4 processors. The 1.2-GHz Samsung Exynos powered Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus scored a much higher 3,353.Acer UM09G41

The Thrive 7-inch scored a respectable 7,635 on An3DBench, which measures graphics prowess, far better than the 7,156 tablet category average, the 7,006 provided by the Kindle Fire, and the 7,120 offered by the Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus turned in a higher 7,899, and the Acer Iconia Tab A100 scored 8,081. However, both of those tablets have lower-resolution screens than the Thrive 7-inch.Acer UM09G51

The Toshiba Thrive 7-inch lasted a mediocre time of 5 hours and 18 minutes on the LAPTOP Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 40-percent brightness. That time is well behind the tablet category average of 6 hours and 42 minutes, the Kindle Fire’s time of 7:34, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus’ time of 7:18.Acer UM09H31

Click to EnlargeThe 5-megapixel rear-facing camera took mediocre pictures that were about on par with those we’ve seen from other 5-MP tablets. Shots of city skyscrapers showed a fair amount of detail, but were more than a little bit white washed. Colors were rather muted in a picture of orange flowers. When we shot a 720p video of a rooftop in the later afternoon, images looked sharper and cleaner, though not at all bright or colorful.Acer UM09H41

Click to EnlargeThe 2-MP front-facing camera took dark, shadowy images of our face in low light and oversatured images when we sat under a lamp. Motion was fairly smooth when we conducted a Skype call with a Windows PC on the other end, though our picture froze a number of times.Acer BT.00803.005

Click to EnlargeToshiba includes very few apps to supplement Android 3.2′s built-in selection. Toshiba File Manager provides access to the device’s internal memory and any external drives or SD cards you plug in. Toshiba Media Player lets you play locally stored video files, and Toshiba Service Station checks for software updates.Acer BT.3506.001

The Thrive also includes a trial versions of Kaspersky Antivirus and the racing game Need for Speed Shift. QuickOffice HD lets you open, but not edit, Office documents. PrinterShare allows you to print to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth printers. Hardwood games, including Backgammon, Euchre, Solitaire, Hearts, and Spades, are also included.Acer BT.T3504.001

Click to EnlargeThe Thrive 7-inch’s sharp 1280 x 800 screen–an industry first for a tablet this size–turns gaming, movie watching, or reading into a visual feast. Throw in a stylish, lightweight chassis and you have one of the better premium 7-inch Android Honeycomb slates on the market. However, the mediocre battery life holds this slate back.Acer BT.T3506.001

Consider the $199 Amazon Kindle Fire if you’re looking to save money and are willing to sacrifice the flexibility of the full Android 3.2 operating system. If you want longer battery life at about the same price, the $399 Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus is the better choice. The Samsung also has a thinner design and doubles as a smart TV remote. However, if you want the 7-inch tablet with the best visual experience, focus your sights on the Thrive 7-inch.Acer LC.BTP00.004

Acer TravelMate 2490  Battery,Acer Aspire 5684WLMi  Battery

The CR620’s maximum run time in idle is 275 minutes. But this 4:35 hours is only a guide, as it does not represent a realistic situation. The wireless module is activated, with the brightness on its lowest setting, and the processor does not have to work. No one uses its notebook like this.Acer TravelMate 2490 Battery

The battery life seems very weak, but in fairness, other notebooks with the same battery capacity cannot do much better either. For example, a Toshiba Satellite Pro S500-115 with a 48Wh battery manages 178 minutes. A Toshiba Qosmio F60 reaches 183 minutes with the same capacity. MSI’s miserliness when it comes to battery capacity is what is preventing this machine from achieving a better battery life.Acer Aspire 5684WLMi Battery

The CR620’s energy consumption is exemplary as it is very low. When the machine is in idle with nothing to do, and all energy-saving options are enabled (brightness on the lowest setting, wireless off), the idle energy consumption is 11.4 Watts. With less helpful energy settings (high performance mode) and the maximum brightness, the idle energy usage is 17.8 Watts. The battery was not recharging during these measurements.Acer Aspire 5683WLMi Battery

You can get more energy-efficient machines than this, like the Toshiba Satellite Pro S500-115 (9.5 Watts, 330M, Intel HD) or the Lenovo Thinkpad L512 2597-5VG (9.2 Watts, 330M, Intel HD). The maximum energy consumption, measured during the Prime95 and Furmark stress test, is 58.1 Watts. This means that the small 65 Watt mains adaptor (223g) is an appropriate size.Acer Aspire 5680 Battery

MSI CR620-i3525FDThe 15.6-inch MSI CR620-i3525FD is reasonably priced (from €470), but it has as many downsides as upsides. The first upside is the good performance of the Core i3-350M (2.26 GHz), which is apparently not hindered by only having 2 GB of RAM. Noise emission and temperature gain during normal office use are also very low, and even during heavy use the CR620 is cool enough to have on your lap.Acer Aspire 5650 Battery

Anyone who appreciates a good range of ports will be pleased to find an ExpressCard34 slot and an HDMI port along with the USBs. It is also good to see that most ports have been positioned on the back edge of the machine. This allows you to have a tidier desk space without cables sticking out to the left and right.Acer Aspire 5634WLMi Battery

The notebook’s downsides start with the workmanship and finish with the keyboard. You can’t escape that plasticky feel with the CR620, mainly because several pieces are not quite accurately cut and some cables can become visible. Office users may be able to overlook this given time, but not the rattly keys and the poor touchpad feedback. The keyboard flexes, some of the keys are tiny and the touchpad keys have virtually no travel. If you type a lot, we simply cannot recommend this machine for you. Acer Aspire 5633WLMi Battery

In addition, the poor battery life (due to the low battery capacity) along with the reflective screen with poor contrast make portable use of the laptop rather difficult. After two and a half hours the really quite chunky 15.6-inch machine has to return to a power socket. However, the CR620’s energy consumption is very low (11.4 Watts in idle) thanks to the Intel HD .Acer Aspire 5632WLMi Battery

Ports on the back of the machine. We didn’t think that laptop manufacturers still remembered their roots.A matt display and better keyboard would have done the CR620 a lot of favours. The touchpad buttons are just impossible.Touching allowed. The Touch notebook can’t decide if it’s for entertainment or technology enthusiasts. An ATI Hybrid Graphics, strong Core i5, 7200 rpm HDD are all oriented toward performance. The hand input function rounds out the whole package.Acer Aspire 5612WLMi Battery

HP Pavilion dv3-2390eg (VY336EA): 13.3 inch with touch inputThe whole world seems to be inspired by touch inputs.Acer Aspire 5612AWLMi Battery They are available in all-in-one PC displays, smart phones and in tablet PCs. Standard notebooks are less often the focus of some touch-enthused producers. After the 15.4 inch Acer Aspire 5745PG-5464G32Mnks with a touch panel, we’ve acquired the smaller 13.3 inch HP Pavilion dv3-2390eg (VY336EA). With its 1366 x 768 pixel glare type display, inputs can be entered by finger touch. In the spirit of an “entertainment notebook PC”, as the dv3 is referred to by the producer, there is plenty of entertaining software on board, most of which are educational or entertainment programs for children.Acer Aspire 5611ZWLMi Battery

We found out in this review whether or not the dv3-2390eg can operate other facets of a notebook. What about the mobile aspects and the input devices? Is a lame office box hidden beneath the pretty glossy design, or rather a high-performing, of a handy 13.3 incher? All the relevant information will be revealed in this review.Acer Aspire 5611AWLMi Battery

The HP dv3-2030rg comes on stage as a typical representative of the Pavilion-Designs.Acer Aspire 5610AWLMi Battery The design is the same as its big brother’s, the dv6 and dv7 (16 or 17 inch). The chrome-colored plastic of the sides surrounds the 13.3-incher and highlights the connection ports. Most notebooks tend to have simple black plastic here, as they aim to minimize the visual emphasis on the open spaces of the ports as much as possible. The Pavilion on the other hand has no problem with this and proudly shows off what it offers. The high-gloss finish might not be to everyone’s taste. Fingerprints and, after a while, dust become visible across the entire surface, even on the slightly shiny keys. The included polishing rag is therefore of utmost importance.Acer Aspire 5114WLMi Battery

The roundish impression suggests great stability, and this impression is confirmed. We could very slightly bend the base unit by holding the corners of the palm rest with both hands. However, the palm rest sits securely and we couldn’t dent the surface at any point. The lid is very thick (14mm). The strong frame provides high torsonal rigidity.Acer Aspire 5113WLMi Battery

By adding pressure, we could only dent the surface of the lid a bit in the middle. The very firm hinges carry on this good impression. They hold the heavy lid firmly in place, which is especially desirable considering the touch feature. When typing normally on the touch screen, the lid doesn’t open any further than is desired.Acer Aspire 5112WLMi Battery

The imprint finish on the lid and the palm rest has style and the moulded screened sheet above the keypad gives a high-quality impression.Acer Aspire 5102WLMi Battery The screened sheet founds off the back of the dv3 (including the stereo loud speakers). In terms of connection ports, HP did things right and invested in everything which could possibly fit into the limited space. In addition to three USB 2.0 ports, one of which is combined with eSATA, we found the bulk of connections on the right side of the case. The eSATA USB combo port is suitable for fast external hard drives. Those looking for more ports can use the ExpressCard34 extension port to upgrade with audio, tv or controller cards. This is not a given on every 13.3 incher. A card reader is also included, as well as HDMI and VGA. It also supports xD-Picture Cards.Acer Aspire 5102WLCi Battery

The network connection via cable or radio is modern, but nothing really special. The Realtek PCI Express GBE Family Controller (Gigabit LAN) and the Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN (DraftN) send and receive at the fastest standard rate. Though the manufacturer left out Bluetooth, this is compensated somewhat by a small infrared remote control. It can be housed in the ExpressCard/34 slot, but note recharged there.Acer Aspire 3690 Battery

HP included no data storage devices such as a driver/Software Recovery DVD. The box contains a remote control CIR (Consumer Infrared), the guarantee card, information on the hybrid graphics card and a quick-start guide. Users have to burn the recovery disk (Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) themselves via the HP Recovery Manager (Tool for DVD creation).Acer Aspire 5101 Battery

The user can expect to find a variety of full versions included on the harddrive. These include the EasyBits Magic Desktop (for children), Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 and the CyberLink DVD Suite. Those who want to jump right into using the Touchpanel will surely play around a while with Bumptop, DigiFish Dolphin and the MegaTouch game package.Unlike the cheapest HP models (625 HP in the test, 12 months carry-in), the Pavilion offers a 24 months collect & return guarantee.Acer Aspire 5100 Battery

Writing with the keyboard is halfway pleasant. It sits firmly and bends only under excessive pressure over the optical drive. The keys have a clear pressure point, a good hub and a solid but slightly dull stroke. The typing feel is purposeful thanks to the generous keyboard layout and the pressure points give good feedback. Even the much criticized arrow keys on notebooks seem very large. The only drawback in typing is posed by the smooth surface of the keys. Over time, an ugly grease forms here which certainly isn’t consistent with the overall look.Acer Aspire 3690 Battery

The mouse control on the smooth mousepad works quite accurately, but the feel isn’t for everyone. Because the silver, patterned surface is mirror smooth, the surface gets quite greasy. If one exaggerates a bit, you get the impression that a tub of Nivea has been smeared all over it. Unfortunately, the equally smooth and shiny buttons continue this trend. They also give a loud, annoying click, as the key hub has been kept exceptionally taut. On the whole, this gives the keys pretty poor feedback.Acer Aspire 3104WLMiB80F Battery

We quickly came to terms with the finger input function and not even a fine-tuning (sensitivity, accuracy) was necessary. Even a very delicate touch of the buttons or a light double tap is enough to perform click/double-clicking. Whoever might want to use a Stylus Pen or a blunt pencil for input will be disappointed. The panel responds only to skin contact, even a finger nail or a pencil eraser has no effect.Acer Aspire 3104WLMiB80 Battery

We were able to install and carry out all the benchmarks and analysis tools using finger touch (except for games). Text input appeared on the screen. This is handled by Windows 7 with the onscreen keyboard. As soon as a box is touched, for example, the URL bar in the browser will open a small key icon which then opens the on-screen input function. Of course keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl + C or Str + P can be initiated. How does a finger replace the right mouse key? When the finger touches the screen for a half second, a circle appears, and after lifting the finger, the context menu.Acer Aspire 3104WLMiB120 Battery

The so-called multi-touch, as we know it from smart phones or laptop touch pad, is also available on the panel. Now, two or even three fingers can be used. In the image viewer, we can zoom in by pulling or pushing two fingers. The rotation of two fingers turns a photo around. A wiping motion switches to the next screen, or scrolls down a Web site. With practice, highlighting specific texts is possible.Acer Aspire 3104 Battery

All this is known from the current smartphones like the iPhone and aren’t novelties anymore.Acer Aspire 3103 Battery Input on the screen works, there is no question about that. There is also no doubt that this type of input is the best input option for tablet PCs/convertibles and smartphones. The question of whether the touch option is most useful in the notebook form factor (without being a convertible) is one potential buyers will have to pose themselves. Still, it is less of a question of price as similarly configured 13.3 inchers without a touch panel cost at most 100 Euro less and go by names like Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820TG or Lenovo IdeaPad Z360 (soon to be in review).Acer Aspire 3102WLMi Battery

In terms of the display of a multimedia laptop, even if it is a 13.3-incher, two issues are important: resolution and contrast. Brightness matters a lot only in cases of outdoor use. The dv3 touch panel has a resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels (WXGA). A higher resolution is not desirable for this form factor and wouldn’t be usual in this price range.Acer Aspire 3102NWLMi Battery

The dv3 disappointed fans of brilliant colors and high contrasts with its black level of 1.21 at maximum brightness. The contrast is calculated at only 150:1, a very low value. Black therefore has an understated gray appearance; colors don’t radiate particularly well. Such a low contrast is typical for office notebooks, netbooks, and unfortunately also for subnotebooks and respectively middle-class multimedia notebooks.Acer Aspire 3102 Battery

HP dv3-2390eg vs. HP Envy14 (N)In terms of the color space coverage, the display panel proves itself to be of the average sort. As a counter example we’ve compared it to the LP133WH1-TLA2 panel in the dv3 to the HP Envy LCD0E09 14. According to our measurements (i1Display 2), the LG-Philips panel covers just half of the Envy-color space (extended).Acer Aspire 3100 Battery

The brightness is important for applications in daylight. While 150 cd / m² is certainly enough for certainly for use on one’s desk, the average of 178 cd / m² we got was not enough for outdoor usage. Whoever wants to sit out on the patio will need at least 230 cd / m². The evenness of the illumination is very good at 87%, so that no spots (on a black screen) can be seen with the naked eye.Acer Aspire One D260 Battery

This dv3 is a notebook for the living room or the kitchen. The anti-glare 13.3 inch display produces heavy reflections. Due to the low brightness, the glare panel does nothing to adjust itself to the sun’s rays. In keeping with the minimal contrasts, the display therefore seems dark and washed out. But we didn’t notice that under heavy cloud cover, the setting in which the accompanying photos were taken.Acer Aspire One D255E Battery

Akku HP ProBook 4405

The built-in web browser on the Sony Reader Wi-Fi is very basic. It includes some pre-loaded bookmarks for Wikipedia, Charger for HP Pavilion dv9700z Thesaurus.com, Reference.com, Goodreads.com, Facebook, Twitter, and Food Network, among others. When we were able to maintain a web connection for more than one page of a website (which wasn’t often), surfing was slow, taking 12 seconds or so to connect to sites such as mobile.nytimes.com. And it took several attempts (and 3 minutes) to load www.laptopmag.com. We would avoid using this device to surf the web.Charger for hp compaq 6710b

Sony offers two fairly pricey covers, colored to match the various exterior colors options (black, red, and white). One is a basic book-like cover for $34.99. The fancier option ($49.99) comes with a built-in retractable light that is powered by a AAA Charger; it should last for 19 hours. Amazon’s has a similar case with a built-in light that’s powered by the device itself, and we think this is a smarter use of energy.Charger for compaq presario cq60

According to Sony, a single charge should last for more than one month if the wireless is off and you only read for a half hour each day. With the Wi-Fi on, you should get three to four weeks of endurance. Sony also claims that the device will fully charge within 2 hours when powered by a wall unit. During our use of the device, we only lost about a third of a charge over the course of a week.Charger for HP COMPAQ 8510p

If you’re looking for an eReader with a solid selection of eBooks and a stylus, Sony’s Reader Wi-Fi is worth a look.Charger for HP COMPAQ 8510w But while it beats the Kindle and Nook in terms of note-taking abilities, it falls well behind the competition in many other areas, and costs $30 more. The sluggish keyboard and dropped Wi-Fi connections proved vexing, to say the least. The Reader Wi-Fi also lacks some of the features offered by its competitors, such as device-to-device lending and social sharing of favorite passages. For $129, we expect more from an eReader.Charger for HP COMPAQ 8710p

November 19th, 2011 by Kenneth Butler, LAPTOP Web Producer/Writer There’s a big story in this week’s reviews but you might be distracted from it. Charger for HP COMPAQ 6720t We can’t blame you for that, not with reviews of the only iPhone/iPod Touch accessory to turn your Apple device into a trigger-ready toy gun, the first buzz-worthy Nokia smartphone to hit the (European) market in a long time, or a 16.4-inch beast of a media notebook. Still, try to focus and you’ll find a three-way showdown between the Amazon Kindle Fire, Barnes & Noble Nook, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, three 7-inch Android slates, each with their own set of pluses and minuses. Keep reading to dive in. Charger for HP COMPAQ 7400

Sony’s raised the stakes on its multimedia line. The 16.4-inch Sony VAIO F includes a 1080p display, Blu-ray player, Nvidia graphics, and a blazing quad-core Core i7 processor. That’s some serious hardware for media lovers, but there is one reason to fold: this desktop replacement will set you back $1,399 and more affordable options are on the market.Charger for HP COMPAQ 8200

Boasting a large 16.4-inch 1080p display, a Blu-ray player, and a healthy stable of multimedia software, Sony’s latest entertainment media machine is sure to impress. A blazing quad-core Core i7 processor with Nvidia graphics ensures the show goes on, but is the VAIO F worth the cost of admission?Charger for HP COMPAQ 8510w Mobile Workstation

The VAIO F is a collection of understated design and interesting angles. The black matte plastic lid is rather austere; a large chrome VAIO insignia is its only decoration. What the notebook lacks in panache, it makes up for with its ability to resist fingerprints and smudges. The lid is a half-inch shorter than the bottom deck, giving the notebook a prominent bottom lip that houses indicator lights for Charger, wireless, and the SD card reader.Charger for HP COMPAQ 8700

The notebook’s interior is similarly spartan,Charger for HP COMPAQ NoteBook 8710w constructed of black matte plastic with few flourishes. The standout features include a large backlit keyboard and a raised plastic strip that serves as the palm rest and the touchpad. The keyboard deck slopes downward, revealing a long, thin speaker grille. Touch-sensitive media controls as well as buttons for VAIO Assist, the web browser, VAIO Media Gallery, and power are located directly above the keyboard.Charger for HP COMPAQ 8710w Mobile Workstation

Measuring 15.7 x 10.7 x 1.3-1.7 inches and weighing 6.6 pounds, the VAIO F easily outweighs both the Gigabyte P2532 (15.4 x 10.4 x 1.1-1.4 inches) and the HP Pavilion dv6t (14.8 x 9.7 x 1.2-1.3 inches), both of which weigh 5.8 pounds. While the Dell XP 15 L502X is slightly smaller at 15 x 10.4 x 1.5 inches, it managed to match the VAIO F’s chunky 6.6-pound frame.Charger for HP COMPAQ 9400

There are many things to like about the VAIO F’s island-style keyboard, including a full number pad and bright backlighting which makes it easier to work in a dim setting. The large flat keys had a nice spring, and we were hit our usual 50-word-per-minute average on the Ten Thumbs Typing Test. However, we did notice a slight flexing of the keyboard as we typed, and we took issue with the undersized left Tab, Caps Lock, and Left Shift keys.Charger for HP COMPAQ nc8200

Although the raised palm rest looks off-putting, we found it to be quite comfortable, though a little warm. Charger for HP COMPAQ nc8230 Integrated into the palm rest is a 3.9 x 1.9 Synaptics touchpad comprised of a series of small raised dots. The added texture felt good against our fingers, and it responded quickly to various mulititouch gestures such as pinch-to-zoom, two-finger flick, and rotation. We were able to scroll through web pages at an easy pace with two-finger scroll and accurately highlight text. The touchpad buttons were fairly stiff, which was a small distraction.Charger for HP COMPAQ nc8430

Surrounded in a glossy black bezel,Charger for HP COMPAQ nw8200 the VAIO F’s 16.4-inch matte 1920 x 1080p LED backlit display gave us crisp detail with vibrant color. We saw clear, distinct text on CNN.com and Joystiq, while Michelle Billingley’s webcomic series Joe gave us bright reds, greens, and yellows. Charger for HP COMPAQ nw8240 But the real test came when we popped in the Blu-Ray edition of The Other Boleyn Girl. While there was a small amount of visual noise, we couldn’t help but be impressed by the deep jewel tones of many of the costumes, including Natalie Portman’s forest-green frock. Eric Bana’s ruby-red robe shimmered and caught every glint of light, almost as if it had a life of its own.Charger for HP COMPAQ nw8240 Mobile Workstation

From movie dialogue and sound effects to streaming music on Pandora or Slacker, Charger for HP COMPAQ nw8440 the notebook consistently gave us loud, clear audio. We were able to further enhance the sound with the Dolby Home Theater control panel that allowed us to switch between movie, music, and gaming presets, ensuring we got the optimal listening experience. Despite the Dolby assist, we did notice that Drake’s “Headlines” was light on the bass, as was Big Sean’s “Marvin and Chardonnay.”Charger for HP COMPAQ nw8440 Mobile Workstation

After 15 minutes of streaming a full-screen Hulu video, the VAIO F was positively chilly registering 87, 92, and 78 degrees Fahrenheit at the touchpad, space between the G and H keys, and underside. That’s well below what we consider to be uncomfortable–95 degrees.Charger for HP COMPAQ nw9440

The right side of the Sony VAIO F houses a tray-loading Blu-ray player, a USB 2.0 port, a headphone jack, and a microphone jack. A Firewire 400 port can be found in the front of the notebook alongside a 4-in-1 card reader, while two USB 3.0 ports, Ethernet, VGA, HDMI, and the power jack reside on the left.Charger for HP COMPAQ nw9440 Mobile Workstation

The 1.3-megapixel webcam captured video and stills in 1280 x 1024p using ArcSoft’s Webcam Companion software. Despite our numerous attempts to adjust the camera settings, colors in images appeared dull and listless. However, details were passably sharp, allowing us to read from a poster in the background.Charger for HP COMPAQ nx7300

Thanks to a quad-core 2.2-GHz Intel Core i7-2670QM processor with 6GB of RAM,Charger for HP COMPAQ nx7400 the VAIO F has some serious power under the hood. The notebook posted 9,608 on the PCMark Vantage. That’s 1,326 points above the desktop replacement average, and it also beats out the P2532 (8,780) and the XPS 15 L502X (8,548), both of which have a 2-GHz Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU and 8GB of RAM. The HP dv6t’s 2.3-GHz Intel Core i5-2410M processor with 6GB brought up the rear with a score of 6,673.Charger for HP COMPAQ nx8200

It took the Sony VAIO F’s 640GB, 7,200-rpm hard drive 59 seconds to boot up the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium, 2 seconds faster than the average. The Gigabyte P2532 and Dell XPS 15 L502X posted 1:00 and 0:53 thanks to their 750GB, 7,200-rpm hard drives. Although it’s also equipped with a 640GB, 7,200-rpm hard drive, the Pavilion dv6t came in dead last at 72 seconds.Charger for HP COMPAQ nx8220

TouchWiz is a skin on top of the default Android operating system that tweaks certain features to create a more versatile user experience. One of the things it adds, for instance, is an app drawer as a permanent icon on the lower right corner of the device’s main screen. Touch the icon and a grid of all your apps appear, which you can scroll through with a quick horizontal swiping motion.charger for Dell latitude d820 battery

TouchWiz also includes a custom notification bar for app alerts; you access it by swiping a pull-down menu from the top, no matter what you’re currently doing. You can find icons for important settings across the top of notifications, tapping one time each to toggle them on or off: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Vibration, and Auto rotation.charger for Dell latitude d830 battery

The Player 5.0 also has a Live Panel widget on the homescreen, which gives you a preview of certain apps you can purchase on the device.charger for Dell studio 17 battery

As it has the most recent version of Android, the Galaxy Player 5.0 has access to the full bevy of Android apps (more than 250,000) on the Android Market. Sadly, charger for Dell studio 15 batterythe racing game Asphalt 6 isn’t supported, but Netflix, HBO Go, Rdio, Pandora, and a whole slew of other entertainment apps are available, including Vlingo, a Siri-like assistant. But a limitation of both the Galaxy Player 5.0 and the iPod touch is that these devices can’t take advantage of location-based apps, since they rely on Wi-Fi for an Internet connection. charger for Dell Studio 1536 battery

Also, in weighing the two, charger for Dell Studio 1537 batterywe found ourselves wishing that the Galaxy Player 5.0 had some sort of counterpart to Apple’s iTunes software to help you organize your music. Sorting tunes on the Player 5.0 was a big chore since the device didn’t come with any desktop software for music management; it forces you to sideload your songs onto the player manually. After you copy your files to it, the Galaxy Player 5.0 auto-classifies the music according to Album and Artist on its stock Music app, but that’s the extent of organization on the player.charger for Dell Studio 1555 battery

The Galaxy Player 5.0, however, is powered by Samsung’s less ambitious single-core 1-GHz ARM Hummingbird processor. (Similarly, the iPod touch also packs Apple’s rather outdated A4 processor, which has since been upgraded in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S to the A5 chip.) The Galaxy Player 5.0 notched 1,823 on the CPU section of the Benchmark test–widely outpaced by the Galaxy S II’s score of 3,365. The Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 has 8GB of internal storage, and users can add up to 32GB using a microSD card that you insert via a (rather flimsy) flap along the top edge of the device. The entry-level iPod Touch also has 8GB and costs $30 less, but lacks microSD expansion.charger for Compaq Presario F700 Battery

Click to EnlargeThe Galaxy Player 5.0 comes with a 3.2MP camera on the back.charger for Compaq Presario V3000 Battery On the whole, it provided decent quality that captured a range of colors, but we weren’t fans of the light leaks that were visible on some of our partially dark photos, particularly on the corners. We shot a street vendor’s table of colorful hats and smartphone cases, and towards the top edge the sequined beanies blended out to bleached colors as sunlight leaked into the picture.charger for Compaq Presario V3100 Battery

We wouldn’t recommend using this as your main camera for important events. In our experience using older iPod Touch models (which have the same camera as the curent one) that device took photos of much better quality. That said, Samsung does include multiple scene modes for taking pictures, including Panorama, Smile Shot, and Vintage.charger for Compaq Presario V6100 Battery

Additionally, the rear camera is capable of 480p video recording, compared to the iPod touch’s 720p footage. Footage of Times Square looked a bit shaky, but it recorded good color and detail of the twinkling Broadway lights during the day.charger for Compaq Presario V6200 Battery

There’s also an integrated VGA camera on the front of the Galaxy Player 5.0. According to Samsung, charger for Compaq Presario V6400 Battery the Galaxy Player 5.0′s 2,500 mAh lithium-polymer Charger will provide a solid 8 hours of playback time on video, and a maximum of 60 hours’ worth of audio playback (on default settings, playing MP3s at 128 Kbps, Volume 15, normal sound, and with the display turned off). While our LAPTOP Charger Test (web surfing via 4G) didn’t run to completion, It lasted 8 hours and 20 minutes with 25% left; extrapolating the results gave us an impressive estimated runtime of 10:35,well above the 6:48 category average for tablets..charger for Compaq Presario V6500 Battery

Unless they really want the larger 5-inch screen, charger for Compaq Presario V6600 Battery platform-agnostic users will probably not find enough enough reasons to pay $70 more for the Galaxy Player 5.0 than they would for the iPod Touch, which has more apps, a more colorful screen, and a better camera. Android fans might prefer the more colorful screen on the Galaxy Player 4.0, but those looking to get the full Gingerbread experience on a media player / tiny tablet with a slightly larger display will love the Galaxy Player’s solid sound, long Charger life, and more-than-adequate performance.charger for Compaq Presario V6700 Battery

Cons: More expensive than competition; Constantly dropped Wi-Fi connections; Sluggish keyboard and touch responsiveness; Stylus can’t be stored inside device; No reader-to-reader lending; Lacks social networking functionality The Verdict: Handwriting input with a stylus and a slick interface can’t save the Sony Reader Wi-Fi from its myriad shortcomings. charger for Compaq Presario V6700TX Battery

Asus LC42SD128 battery

In the upper corners, the screen brightness drops off a bit, but with a brightness distribution of 83%, this isn’t too bad. On average the screen shines at a more than decent 295.2 cd/m².The black level was measured at 0.68 cd/m². The display thus reaches a maximum contrast ratio of 466:1 at center screen.ASUS M2 Battery

Measurements were performed with the brightness sensor off which otherwise automatically adjusts the screen brightness to the environment or at least should. ASUS M3 Battery We found, however, that the screen was still a bit too dark even with the sensor activated. Moreover, the sensor is located on the left edge of the device, which makes it easy to cover up with your left thumb when holding it in the landscape view. Therefore, the display constantly ends up getting too dim. The only way to avoid this problem is to deactivate the sensor.ASUS M5 Battery

Using the Galaxy Tab outside is made possible by the good screen brightness. As long as you maintain a good viewing angle, using it just about anywhere is possible. You nevertheless have to get used to reflections on the glossy screen as well as streaks and fingerprint marks appearing all over the glass display.ASUS M6 Battery

Even at sharp viewing angles in any direction, the screen content is remarkably clear and easy to recognize. When buying the device, one thing to keep in mind is that at angles approaching 90º some colors begin to look a bit faded. As previously mentioned, sharp viewing angles do result in more reflections appearing on the screen.ASUS S5 Battery

Let’s take a look at the raw specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Tab. ASUS W3V BatteryThe Cortex A8 Hummingbird CPU processes data at a clock rate of 1 GHz. The processor is aided by 512 MB of working memory and 2GB of flash memory. Considering this, the Galaxy Tab doesn’t differ much from the Dell Streak (Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon Processor 1GHz) and should be up to par with the Apple iPad’s A4 (with only 256MB DRAM however). Various smartphones likewise use similar technology—the Samsung Galaxy S has the same CPU, for example.ASUS W5V Battery

It’s unfortunately quite difficult to objectively judge the performance capacity of the Galaxy Tab and compare it to other devices with ARM processors. As far as cross-platform benchmarks go, there are only a few browser benchmarks available whose results really only apply to the particular browser and might not demonstrate the performance capability of the device at large.ASUS V6V Battery

Unlike with the Dell Streak, the most commonly used browser tests all ran flawlessly on the Galaxy Tab. In the Google V8 (Ver. 6) benchmark the Galaxy Tab earned a total of 192 points. It thereby ranks in ahead of the iPad (99 points), but remains somewhat behind the Google Nexus One smartphone, also running on Android 2.2 (287 points).ASUS Z3A Battery

The Peachkeeper benchmark from Futuremark managed 428 points, beating the Apple iPhone by a nose (415 points). The larger iPad remains a good deal ahead with 497 points.ASUS Z33A Battery

In the Sunspider benchmark the Galaxy Tab demonstrates a much faster performance than the Apple iPhone and iPad at 8233.9 milliseconds. The Google Nexus One smartphone once again leads the pack with 5795 points. The Dell Streak running on Android 1.6 gets the short end of the stick by far in this test at 28240 milliseconds. ASUS Z71V Battery

A considerable advantage of Android devices compared to the current Apple iOS is their multitasking ability,ASUS A1 Battery that is, to run multiple applications at once. This has already worked quite well on the Dell Streak, where tons of apps end up running in the background usually unnoticed by the user. So that users can remain aware of apps running in the background, Samsung has fitted the Galaxy Tab’s homescreen with a widget displaying this information as well as the CPU load and RAM taken up by apps. You can even conveniently close out certain apps right from the homescreen. ASUS F7 Battery

Application ManagerWe were a bit surprised by the fact that with various apps open as well as browser windows, the system suddenly started responding very slowly as we were entering a date into the calendar program. Only after closing out some unnecessary programs did the operating system run more smoothly.Asus F7000 Battery

The verdict: multitasking is no problem, but you shouldn’t overload the system because resources are limited. It’s pretty exciting in this regard that the upcoming release of Apple’s iOS4 will include multitasking. Asus F74 Battery

As far as video playback and internet use is concerned,Asus F7400 Battery one term has been constantly coming up since the first critiques of the iPad hype, even in local newspapers: Flash. That’s right, Adobe Flash is supported (10.1) and all types of browser games and videos can be played right on the tablet screen. This also applies, of course, to the Flash-animated advertisements found all over the web. Every now and then, Flash videos don’t run very smoothly and websites can often be irritatingly unresponsive due to delays caused by flash content.Asus F7400B Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Tab comes with 16 GB of built-in flash memory (storage) for data and applications. On top of that, there’s a MicroSD port that allows you to extend the storage capacity to 32 GB according to Samsung. This is, however, much less than the large version of the iPad (64 GB), although the user can switch out MicroSD cards on the Samsung Galaxy if necessary.Asus F74B Battery

Like the Apple iPad and the Dell Streak, the Samsung Galaxy Tab always remains silent because it contains no moving parts (no fan, flash memory).Asus F7B Battery

When running several applications, there is a noticeable warming of the bottom half of the device but it never gets so hot as to be irritating. Only during the stress test did the temperature rise considerably, that is, after repeatedly testing with the browser benchmark. The highest recorded temperatures at this time were 37.7ºC for the top half of the device and 35.3ºC for the back of the Samsung Galaxy Tab.Asus L7 Battery

Speakers on the Lower Edge of the TabletSound flows forth from two small nodes on the lower edge of the Galaxy Asus L7000 BatteryTab which flank the docking port. We were first surprised by the thoroughly decent maximum volume of the 7-inch tablet. Moreover, the sound stays clean even at max. volume, which is a real credit to the Galaxy Tab. The tiny tab can easily fill a room or be perfectly audible, say in the park. The actual quality of the sound is, however, not exceedingly rich, but as a whole the speakers are quite good considering the compact case of the Galaxy Tab.Asus L7000B Battery

The sound level when watching a film is likewise decent, although you’d end up plugging in headphones in most cases. Using the included earphones, we could hear a subtle humming in the background. In terms of sound quality, the headphones aren’t too bad even though the range of sound seems rather narrow. Asus L7000C Battery

What we found to help increase the volume of the Galaxy Tab is placing it on a flat surface so that the sound waves reflect off the surface.Asus L7000D BatteryAccording to the official specs given by Samsung, the Galaxy Tab is equipped with a 4000 mAh lithium polymer battery. This means, the tablet should supposedly have a battery life of up to 1500 hours in standby mode and 16.7 hours of phone time (3G).

Naturally, it’s predictable that the tablet wouldn’t quite reach such a lofty battery life in practice. So, we took it upon ourselves to test and record the battery life under various conditions.Asus L7000E Battery

We nearly drained the battery after 9-10 hours of everyday work, that is,Asus L7000G Battery through moderately intense use of the tablet as an MID (mobile internet device), telephone and media player (video and audio). Heavy use can leave the battery drained in just one day. This somewhat shorter battery life was confronted while performing the stress test (browser benchmarks) and later playing HD video content. Here the battery life reaches about 280 minutes (around 4.5 hours). However, running HD content exclusively (Big Buck Bunny, YouTube, 1080p) brings the battery life down another notch to a minimum of 150 minutes.Asus L7000H Battery

Therefore, it depends wholly on individual use how long a battery life the Samsung Galaxy Tab will have. Continual consumption of multimedia content will definitely drain the battery a good deal faster than ordinary office work like internet-based research, phone calls and scheduling. Asus L7200 Battery

Samsung Galaxy TabYou don’t have to hold your breath any longer.Asus L7300 Battery The Samsung Galaxy Tab is here. The hype about it bringing about the demise of the iPad didn’t seem to ring true with us. The difference in size is an important factor in all this as well as the fact that iOS and Android operating systems tend to go their separate ways. One of the most noticeable differences when comparing the two devices is that the iPad is a good deal smoother and sleeker than the Galaxy Tab. This makes the Samsung’s price, which is higher than that of the already expensive iPad, all the more irritating. This high price is exactly what keeps the Galaxy Tab from attaining perfection and is altogether incomprehensible.Asus L7B Battery

The Galaxy Tab does have some very good points like its various pre-installed software, up-to-date Android 2.2 operating system, convenient built-in digital camera, frontcam for video chatting and of course its full functionality as a cell phone. That is, a bunch of areas in which the Apple iPad is no worse off. Asus L7C Battery

The iPad’s strong dependency on iTunes software is a major criticism that the Galaxy Tab avoids. It’s quickly recognized as a storage device via USB. Transferring files is as easy as copy and paste. Automatic updates, like those during every synchronization with iTunes, are lacking, however.Asus L7D Battery

Altogether a colorful mix of pros and cons, which can only be weighed by each user individually to make the final decision. Without a doubt, the Galaxy Tab brings with it enormous potential thanks to its various and respectable features. Satisfied iPad users won’t feel threatened by this new development and will continue using their 10-inch tray-sized tablets unabated, happily carrying them under one arm.Asus L7E Battery

Not including a phone or data plan, the Samsung Galaxy Tab is available starting at 629 Euro at various online stores. The comprehensive set of software already installed—including GPS software—when we received the tablet. A step closer to perfection. Better adjusted apps with smoother visual transitions, a user interface more pleasing to the eye.Asus L7G Battery

The price structure. A starting price of 600-700 Euro is more than the comparable Apple iPad (16GB, 3G, 599 Euro). The currently best-known alternative would be the Apple iPad, even though its 10-inch screen should put it in a different class altogether. Dells Streak 5“ is the closest to measuring up to the Galaxy Tab, although it’s still only available with Android 1.6.Asus L7H Battery

The buyer: Isn’t deterred by a price that starts at 1050€. He is looking for a slim laptop for on the move (UMTS) and needs a docking solution in the office. Dell 1520 adaptor

Acer TravelMate TimelineX 8573TGThe notebook: DELL 3500 adaptor Acer attempts a balancing act among work-suitable input devices / good workmanship / docking port and gaming performance with a surprisingly solid and everyday suitable case (magnesium-aluminum alloy). The NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M copes well with the latest games and the Core i7 2620M belongs to the upper range. The matt HD screen pulls the devices rating down due to low contrasts, tight viewing angles and low brightness. The buyer: Is looking for the high quality of a Dell Latitude, but doesn’t want to pay a tremendous price. The entry in Dell’s pro range starts at 800€ (Core i3). Once again. The Toshiba Thrive had a rough start on the American market. Toshiba is now trying to bring the device to users in Europe under a different name. Read here, what the AT100 is capable of and how it fares in comparison to famous brands.Dell Inspiron 13R adaptor

The tablet market is highly competitive,Dell Inspiron N3010 adaptor and virtually every major manufacturer tries to gain ground with its own tablet. Toshiba tried to launch the AT100 tablet under the name “Thrive” in the USA. But it only had moderate success there. Not least did various teething problems make the tablet’s life hard. Enough time has passed to straighten these out and now we hold the version for the European market curiously in our hands. We will examine whether Toshiba has been able to really eliminate the growing pains in our review.Dell Inspiron N3010D-148 adaptor

The Toshiba AT100 Android tablet is completely made of plastic. Dell Inspiron N3010D-168 adaptor Toshiba takes a different approach compared to many other competitors, since their tablets are either completely or at least partly made of aluminum or alloys. The entire front is, as common for tablets, dominated by a big glass plate. The screen is underneath this. The flipside is enclosed by a big plastic surface. A line pattern has been incorporated in the plastic and is to provide a better hold than, for example, a smooth surface would. Moreover, the surface has a rubber coating that gives additional grip. Dell Inspiron N3010D-178 adaptor

The tablet doesn’t make the best impression in terms of quality.Dell Inspiron N3010R adaptor Irregular gaps around the screen are only a part of the flaws that we noticed. While the gap is as good as closed on the one side, the other has a width of several millimeters. These gaps are predestined for accumulating dirt especially on the front. Even the flipside has its drawbacks. When pressing the plastic rear part, it can be warped with ease and the case emits a creaking noise. The plastic cover plate for the interfaces also doesn’t make a trustworthy impression.Dell Inspiron 14R adaptor

The Toshiba AT100 tablet can score in connectivity. While many tablets sooner cutback on interfaces (in particular the iPad), we can almost speak of diversity on the Toshiba AT100. In addition to the usual headphone and power jacks, it has 2 USB ports (1 USB 2.0, 1 mini USB) and a HDMI port. Dell Inspiron N4010 adaptor

The card reader has to especially be mentioned.Dell Inspiron N4010D adaptor It allows the tablet’s memory to be expanded up to 32 GB with standard SD cards. The tablet also has a docking port located on its left. However, the dock isn’t included in the scope of delivery and has to be purchased. Although it is advertised on Toshiba’s homepage, we couldn’t find a German online shop that is currently selling the dock. From online forums it becomes clear that it either has to be obtained from abroad or be explicitly ordered over an authorized Toshiba dealer.Dell Inspiron N4010D-148 adaptor

The Toshiba AT100 tablet offers wifi and Bluetooth as communication options. While WLAN is available in 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth is version 2.1 +EDR. A UMTS version of the tablet has not yet been announced. Dell Inspiron N4010D-158 adaptor

The tablet’s scope of deliver is comprised of a power adapter and the usual documentation. Moreover, Toshiba includes the almost thickest user’s manual that we’ve ever seen for an electric appliance for the AT100… Dell Inspiron N4010R adaptor

Toshiba delivers the AT100 tablet with a 1 year international bring in manufacturer warranty (Europe, Mideast, Africa) incl. an onsite pick-up service in Germany and Austria when the repair is registered via the Toshiba notebook hotline.Dell Inspiron 15R adaptor

Toshiba doesn’t use a self-created keyboard and relies on the Android 3.1 keyboard. Its size varies depending on how the tablet is held. The keyboard’s responsiveness is impressive. However, there is no palpable feedback like on a real keyboard. Although an attempt has been made to compensate this with key tones or vibrations on the tablet, it is remote from that of a real keyboard.Dell Inspiron N5010 adaptor

The touchscreen proved to be reliable in the test. The touchscreen’s responsiveness is very good, and comparable with the iPad’s. The touchscreen only lacks the precision of a few competitors. The wrong item was occasionally hit on smaller buttons. However, this hardly ever carried weight in routine use. Surfing and navigating works perfectly despite these minor inaccuracies.Dell Inspiron N5010D adaptor

Voice entry will likely be of more interest than the keyboard in the future. It should then be possible to dictate texts to the tablet with its assistance. However, voice entry proved to be unusable in the test. The spoken sentence was only written properly in the fewest cases. Although we spoke carefully and clearly, words were left out or completely misused. It seems that voice recognition is more a gimmick than a useful feature here at the moment.Dell Inspiron N5010D-148 adaptor

The Toshiba AT100 has 2 cameras: One 2.0 megapixel camera on the front and one 5.0 megapixel camera on the flipside.Dell Inspiron N5010D-168 adaptor Neither camera has a flash. While acceptable pictures can still be made in daylight with the rear-sided camera, the front camera couldn’t convince us. Details aren’t very clear and they also have an intense red-orange hue. The pictures look over-saturated and “faded”. In contrast, the pictures of the rear-sided camera seem to have a slight blue cast. Dell Inspiron N5010R adaptor

The Toshiba AT100′s 10.1 inch screen has a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. Dell Inspiron M501 adaptorThus it’s quite suitable for rendering HD (720p) videos. If 1080p videos are to be watched, an external monitor has to be used. A TV can be connected to the tablet via the HDMI out without further ado. The screen is cloned no matter if the menu or an App is opened. The sound is also transmitted to the TV via the HDMI cable. The tablet didn’t have any problems transmitting Full HD (1080p) videos to a Full HD TV and rendering them smoothly.Dell Inspiron M501R adaptor

The tablet’s screen can serve with an average brightness of 218.6 cd/m2. In comparison to other tablets, the Toshiba tablet doesn’t do very well here. Other tablets achieve brightness rates of around 300 cd/m2 (compare iPad 2: 390 cd/m2). Dell Inspiron M5010 adaptor

A low black value of 0.28 cd/m2 ensures a good contrast of 807:1. However, the screen struggles with fingerprints. They naturally can’t be prevented on a touchscreen, but compared to the iPad the Toshiba AT100′s screen seems more susceptible to them. Dell Inspiron M5010R adaptor

In terms of color space, GX660R’s display does not reach the level of our reference models like the Dell XPS 16 with RGB-LED backlight or the display with extended color space of the HP Envy 14 (first model). Our test model comes with just an 08/15 display panel. Asus X42 Battery

MSI GX660R vs. Dell XPS16(t)Using the MSI GX660R outside is not recommended. the glossy display reflects ambient light to such an extent that it’s hard to recognize anything on the screen. If you’re assuming you can sit on the veranda of a café or in the park to play a game of Crysis or Starcraft II, the battery life alone is enough to cut that short.Asus X42D Battery

The MSI GX660R’s display has a good range of viewing angles, particularly the vertical tilt of the screen which can bend back to 135 degrees. In the horizontal plane, you can still recognize what’s on the screen when standing right next to the notebook, although the screen brightness does drop off at about 45 degrees.Asus X42DE Battery

MSI has chosen the Intel Core i7-740QM as the processor for this notebook.Asus X42F Battery The 740QM is a quad-core processor with four native cores and a total of 8 threads. The standard clock rate comes to 1.73 GHz and can be increased to a maximum of 2.93 GHz by means of the Turboboost technology. With an energy consumption of 45 watts, the 740QM is among the more power-consuming mobile processors offered by Intel. Cooling with the 740QM also has to be more intensive than with smaller CPUs, which is why the 740QM is usually built into larger notebooks.Asus X42J Battery

The graphics card here is the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870. Asus X42JB Battery This too is a powerful piece of hardware. It was put on the market in January 2010 and was then the fastest mobile single-core graphics card on the market until the Nvidia GeForce GTX480M usurped the throne. With a power consumption of up to 50 watts, the graphics card eats up more energy than the quad-core processor. The two together make a very powerful but very energy-consuming team.Asus X42JE Battery
The GX660R is also equipped with two hard disks from Western Digital with 500 GB each as well as 4 GB of RAM. Asus X42JK BatteryThe MSI GX660R has a total of three slots for RAM. Two of those slots are found at the back of the notebook, while the third is located underneath the keyboard. Almost all the hardware is accessible through a large opening located at the bottom of the base unit, so that—other than a few screws—there’s nothing in the way of a memory upgrade later on or a switch to an SSD. According to the Windows 7 Performance Index, all the components other than the hard drive perform exceptionally well. The hard drive is rated the slowest of the hardware at 5.9 points, but it’s still very good compared to other previously reviewed conventional hard disks. All the other hardware ranks in above the 7.0 mark and goes to show what a powerful notebook the MSI GX660R really is.Asus X52 Battery

We used Cinebench versions R10 and R11.5 to test the strength of the CPU. In these test, Asus X52D Battery the MSI GX660R earned some outstanding scores. Especially with its 64 bit support, the quad-core processor really demonstrates its power. The GPU also does an excellent job in the Cinebench tests. The GX660R with the HD5870 GPU now leads the rankings board for the Cinebench R11.5 OpenGL 64 Bit Test and the Cinebench R10 Shading (64 bit) Test.Asus X52DE Battery

In order to test the DirectX 11 capability of the graphics card, we used the Unigine Heaven 2.1 benchmark. The notebook achieved an average of 23.1 frames per second, thereby just barely falling short the 24 fps mark. Beyond 24 fps, the human eye no longer perceives moving pictures, promoting the illusion of perfectly smooth motion.Asus X52DR Battery

In the 3D Mark benchmarks our notebook with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 ranks in quite well but doesn’t manage to break any records here. Our in-review ATI graphics card is sadly defeated by the Nvidia GeForce GTX460M and the 480M. In the 3D Mark 06 benchmark, the GX660R makes it into the upper third with 13534 points and finds itself just behind comparable models like the Asus G73.Asus X52F Battery

The MSI GX660R is unencumbered by the demands of rendering HD video, playing HD-ready (720p) or full-HD (1080p) with no problem at all regardless whether it’s off the hard drive or streamed off the internet.Asus X52J Battery

the HD Tune test on multiple hard disks in our sample notebook yielded some fair results. The average transfer rate of 112.6 MB/s demonstrates the HDD’s good performance. The access time of 18.2 milliseconds is, however, a good deal higher than with other models. Asus X52JB Battery

All the games we tested ran smoothly on the MSI GX660R. You can safely assume, therefore, that the notebook is well suited for upcoming releases. We used the turbo mode when running the games, thus increasing the processor’s clock rate to over 3.0 GHz and triggering the cooling system to turn on earlier—which then runs much more efficiently, albeit very loudly.Asus X52JC Battery

Starcraft 2 cannot be left out of current gaming benchmarks.Asus X52JE BatteryThe very popular real-time strategy game is run flawlessly by the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870. With the lowest detail settings on and a resolution of 1,024×768 pixels, the GX660R reaches a frame rate of 166 fps. With high detail settings on and a resolution of 1,360×768—displayed in 1080p—the GX660R manages a still very good 56 fps. Asus X52JG BatteryThe GX660R thus does not fall into anonymity among countless other notebooks of similar performance but rather takes its place as a leader in our rankings. The GX660R’s performance is on par with the Deviltech HellMachine 720QM/ ATI HD5870), which also managed 56 fps. Our MSI test notebook however trails behind notebooks with a Nvidia GTX 460M graphics card like the Toshiba Qosmio X500-TZ1V (57 fps) and the Asus G73JW (GTX 460M – 68 fps).Asus X52JK Battery

The action-packed shooter, FarCry 2 doesn’t present any problem to the GX660R’s combination of an ATI graphics card and quad-core CPU. Asus X52JR Battery122 fps with the lowest detail settings and 58 fps with the highest settings makes FarCry 2 playable with any graphics settings on. In the rankings for FarCry 2, the GX660R also manages to snag one of the top spots in our rankings. As before, the MSI notebook ranks in alongside the Deviltech HellMachine (ATI HD 5870 without Crossfire). But even the Crossfire version of the Deviltech HellMachine outshines its counterpart by a mere 10 fps. Asus X52N Battery

Crysis was for a long time the most graphics-intensive game out there and is therefore still used as part of our graphics benchmarks.Asus X5I Battery Moreover, the computations dealing with physics in higher detail settings constitute good testing conditions for the performance capacity of the notebook. Asus X67 Battery But even Crysis hardly makes the GX660R break a sweat. At 116 fps with low detail settings and 56 fps with high detail settings, the game runs perfectly smoothly. In the Crysis CPU benchmark, the MSI GX660R does a bit better than the Deviltech HellMachine (without Crossfire). The MSI notebook does just as well in the Crysis GPU benchmark. Only the mySN XMG8.c (GTX285 SLI – 62.0 fps), the Clevo 901F (GTX 480M – 62.3 fps) and the Deviltech HellMachine DTX (GTX 480M – 68.8 fps) manage to outperform the MSI GX660R. Asus X8C Battery

The most recent Fifa version hardly got the GX660R to break a sweat. The notebook pumped out excellent values at every level of graphics settings. With high detail settings, the notebook actually managed to place at the very top in the rankings board.asus p31 Battery

The MSI GX660R has a great deal of powerful hardware.asus p31jg-ro199x Battery This is evident not only by the tests we did but also by the noise produced by the fans. In idle mode, the noise level stays at an acceptable 31.7 dB(A). With the hardware active, the fans start spinning and the noise level rises to 47.4 dB(A). asus p31sd-ro132x BatteryTurning the turbo mode on only makes things worse. When using the notebook in turbo mode, which is most often the case when playing games, the fans produce and ear-splitting 52.3 dB(A). Considering the noise it makes, you’d think the notebook had floated up from the table and were flying across the room. If you want to watch a film or play a game, you’d better reach for your headphones because you won’t have an easy time overshadowing the noise from those fans. asus p41jg Battery

In idle mode, you can hold the MSI GX660R on your lap without any worries and start surfing the internet or do some office work. At a maximum of 28ºC, there’s no danger of the notebook becoming too hot. The top part of the base unit barely gets over 25ºC, not particularly warm. In idle mode, the power supply stays cool.asus p41sj Battery

Under heavy use, asus p41sv Battery only one section of the bottom of the base unit heats up noticeably, the rest remaining at just about the same temperature. If this particular spot does not come in contact with your legs as you hold the laptop on your lap, you can continue doing so even when the hardware is under the heaviest of use. asus p41sv-wx032x BatteryThe top of the base unit also heats up only slightly, keeping a good distance from the critical temperature range. In the Torture Test with Prime95 and FurMark, we measured a CPU temperature of up to 93ºC. In the course of this drawn out Torture Test we did not notice any dropping off in performance. That is to say, even under long-lasting stress, the GX660R’s hardware still functions at full capacity. Once we reduced the high level of stress on the notebook, the temperature seriously dropped within a few seconds—the powerful cooling system helps a great deal in this regard. During the Torture Test, the power supply becomes quite hot at 50ºC. asus u31j Battery

Asus A31-B43

As known from Clevo,Asus A42-K53 the connectivity is impressive on a broad scale. Starting with the rear that has the power socket (angled cable) and a Kensington lock. A USB 2.0 port and three audio sockets (microphone, headphone, S/PDIF-out) follow on the right. Most interfaces are however found on the left (not ideal for lefties). Whilst the RJ-45 Gigabit LAN port allows access to the world wide web and the VGA, respectively HDMI out makes using external monitors possible, there are two further USB 2.0 ports and an eSATA port for hard disks, input devices or other peripherals. Asus A32-K93

Clevo has even installed a cutting-edge USB 3.0 port. A cardreader, which is supposed to be capable of up to nine formats, finishes the array off (see data on the right). The buyer only has to live without a FireWire port and an ExpressCard slot, with which many competing products can serve.Asus A42-K93

Wireless communication is possible either via Bluetooth (standardly installed, version 2.1) or WLAN (optional for a surcharge, 15 to 40 euro). An integrated microphone, a webcam with 2.0 megapixels and a fingerprint scanner that is located between both touchpad keys belong to the additional equipment.Asus A32-U46

Schenker restrains itself exemplary in terms of software installation. The mySN XMG A500′s system is very organized and only the necessary drivers are found. Resource devouring bloatware is fortunately looked for in vain.Asus A41-U46

The scope of delivery turns out somewhat modest. Schenker hasn’t put anything apart from a 90 watt adapter, a short manual and a driver, respectively software DVD into the box. Customers who order an operating system at least receive an original Windows 7 DVD, which makes the otherwise annoying burning of recovery media superfluous.Asus A42-U46

In terms of warranty, Schenker offers 24, 36 or 48 months pickup & return service. 6, 12 or 24 months of these are even with immediate repair (in Germany).Asus A32-NX90

Adept users will likely recognize the mySN XMG A500′s keyboard. A32-N55The installed model is also used in other Clevo barebones, such as the W860CU. The full-sized keyboard can’t only score bonus points with its separate keys and sufficiently sized keys (14×14 mm), but also with its good typing feel. The pressure point is well defined, the stroke pleasantly crisp. The feasible layout is another advantage. You’ll have accommodated perfectly within the shortest period.Asus A42-G74

However, we didn’t like the trigger noise quite as much. It’s fairly loud and clattery. Clevo has unfortunately waived on a practical light. The installation of a separate number pad conciliates us again though. Beyond that, the so-called VGA button in the vicinity of the left hinge is worth a mention. It forces the system to solely use the incorporated graphics unit.Asus LC42SD128

The positive impression is continued with the 90×45 mm sized touchpad. The touchpad is only slightly submerged and it is only insufficiently separated from the wrist-rest in terms of color. In return, the slightly corrugated surface grants a good amount of feedback. Additionally, the touchpad is also precise in the practical test. The scroll function responds reliably; the supported multi-touch control is intuitive.Asus A32-N61

Because it’s not absolutely in line with the space key, the risk of typos is reduced in games. If you don’t want to take any risk, you can simply disable the touchpad completely. Merely the touchpad’s gliding traits could be a bit better. The finger glides more smoothly on some other devices. We find the wobbly touchpad keys worthy of improvement. The key stroke length is partly too long.Asus A32-X64

Gaming suitable multimedia notebooks with a matt display are rare at the moment. The mySN XMG A500 is one of these rare exceptions. The 15.6 inch screen can serve with an LED backlight and an aspect ratio of 16:9. The screen diameter is 39.60 cm. The resolution of 1600×900 has been cleverly chosen. It provides enough work surface for multi-window use without taxing the graphics card in games too much.Asus A33-M50

The image quality is one of the mySN XMG A500′s strengths. While typical run-of-the-mill displays frequently don’t exceed a brightness of 200 cd/m2, the installed AUO13EE screen can score with a good average brightness of 211 cd/m2. Even if the illumination of 77% isn’t overwhelming, you don’t notice the difference of 181.6 cd/m2 at the darkest spot and 236 cd/m2 on the brightest in use.Asus L062066

The black value proves to be pleasantly low with 0.29 cd/m2.Asus L072051 Dark sequences only drift slightly into the gray range. An overall very good contrast of 759:1 is the result. Color and brightness gradations are sufficiently differentiated. Of course, the matt display can’t keep up with the color brilliance, saturation and contrast ratio of comparable, glossy models, despite its good rates. But the other assets compensate these shortcomings.Asus L0790C6

OutdoorsThe mySN XMG A500 is very well suitable for outdoor use due to its matt surface and fairly high luminosity. You can even still recognize something on the screen in direct sunlight. There are hardly ever irritating reflections in opposition to glossy representatives. The eyes aren’t stressed additionally.Asus 90-NYX1B1000Y

A positive verdict can also be given for the viewing angle stability. Slight image changes first turn up at larger angles on the horizontal plane. Color and brightness falsifications turn up earlier on the vertical plane (particularly from the lower side). Nevertheless, the competition usually doesn’t do as well in this matter.Asus A31-B53 A31-K52

The mySN XMG A500 can be equipped with various Intel dual core processors.Asus A32-K52 Our test device was configured with the brand new Core i5-580M, which belongs to the currently fastest mobile dual cores beside the Core i7-620M and Core i7-640M. The Core i5-580M is based on Intel’s newest Nehalem architecture and is manufactured in a cutting-edge 32nm process. The power consumption of 35 watts isn’t exactly low, but in view of the installed memory controller and the incorporated graphics chip (GMA HD), the consumption is relativized a bit.Asus A32-N82 A41-K52

The dual core not least obtains its high performance from the 30172 KB sized L3 cache. The basic clock rate of 2.666 GHz is aptly sized. The clock rate is even increased to 3.333 GHz with the Turbo Boost technology (depending on the load). On the other side, Hyperthreading technology simulates two virtual cores, which allows the Core i5-580M to process four threads simultaneously.Asus A42-K52

The benchmark program, Cinebench, is perfectly suited to compare the performance of various processors. Starting with Cinebench R10′s single core rendering (64 bit), where the Core i5-580M can exceed the fast quad core i7-740QM by a whole 14% (4377 to 3845 points) due to its high clock rate.Asus A42-N82

As expected, the tide turns in multi core rendering. Since the Core i7-740QM can’t process only four,Asus K52L681 but eight threads at the same time due to the Hyperthreading technology, it is superior to the Core i5-580M by 14% (10751 to 9411 points). This trend intensifies in the strongly designed for parallel calculations, Cinebench R11. Whilst the Core i5-580M has to be satisfied with good 2.5 points, the Core i7-740QM achieves a 20% higher result of 3.0 points.Asus a32-u31

Nvidia’s state-of-the-art Fermi architecture celebrates its debut in the mobile sector with the GeForce 400 series.Asus a42-u31 The popular midrange model, GeForce GT 425M, does its job in the mySN XMG A500. The graphics card is DirectX 11 capable and manufactured in a structure width of 40nm. It promises to supply a good performance with 96 unified shaders (GeForce GTX 460M: 192 shaders) and a 1024 MB sized DDR3 video memory. The GeForce GT 425M clock rates are 560 MHz (core), 700 MHz (memory) and 1120 MHz (shaders). 700 MHz for the memory are a bit below standard. Previous devices had a memory speed of 800 MHz (e.g. Acer Asprie 5745DG).Asus A42-U53

Another drawback is that the memory is tethered to 128 bits and is thus very narrow. This turns out to be a bottleneck especially in higher resolutions and details. In order to bypass this problem, Nvidia should have either used a faster GDDR5 memory or a 256 bit wide interface. In return, the GeForce GT 424M can serve with an extensive list of features. For example, PhysX stands for GPU based physics calculation.Asus A32-U53

However, the highlight of the mySN XMG A500 is Nvidia’s Optimus technology. Asus 9COAAS031219With Optimus, a notebook is able to dynamically switch between the incorporated (GMA HD) and the dedicated graphics unit (GeForce GT 425M). Thus, it places the focus primarily on the battery life or the performance – so, the perfect alliance. In opposition to other “switchable graphics” processes (e.g. Acer Aspire 4820TG), this happens automatically and without a visible transition.Asus A31-UL20

By the way, a GeForce driver from the 250 range is mandatory for Optimus to work flawlessly. Fortunately, Schenker has installed the fairly new ForceWare 259.39 on our test device, which recognized all programs and games reliably. The situation looked completely different a few months ago for the mySN QMG6, for example. An obsolete driver led to numerous problems.Asus A32-UL20

In case an application doesn’t run on the dedicated graphics card the odd time,A31-U20 a short fingering with the Nvidia driver usually helps. The profile of single applications can be set comfortably in “application settings”. If you activate the menu point “Add ‘Run with graphics processor’ Option to Context Menu” under view, you can also directly start an .exe with the dedicated graphics card via right click (see screenshots). You can find detailed information about Optimus in our special article in case of interest.A32-U20
